Living Systems Laboratory Technician
SUMMARY
The Living Systems Laboratory Technician is responsible for day to day laboratory operations that support public exhibits and programs in the Living Systems area of the Exploratorium. The laboratory technician will have a primary role in maintaining live organisms, daily set-up of exhibits, and lab maintenance. The lab tech will assist in organizing lab records, maintaining equipment and lab facility, repairing equipment and exhibits, and researching various technical or biological solutions to problems. An interest in natural phenomena and an ability to collaborate in a team environment are crucial aspects of the position. Applicants must be able to work weekend days. This position reports to the Living Systems Facility Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Execution: Consistency in daily set-up of Life Sciences exhibits under direction of lab manager. Including preparation of solutions, cultures, and routine care of marine invertebrates, plants, freshwater fish, insect colonies, and microbes. Live microscope demonstrations for the public as scheduled.
- Solutions/Idea Generation: Regularly contribute to troubleshooting, health care, and repair of Living Systems organisms, exhibits, protocols and lab equipment. Provide support for museum programs and projects related to life sciences as needed.
- Facilities/Institutional Support: Routine maintenance of organisms, exhibits, and lab equipment. Maintain order and cleanliness of laboratory and equipment.
- Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BS/BA in the biological sciences or significant credits towards a degree and 1 year’s work in a biology lab setting, or an equivalent combination of training and education.
- Demonstrated interest in biology.
- Experience working with live organisms, zebrafish breeding, aquarium care, and indoor horticulture highly desirable.
- Basic biology laboratory skills.
- Ability to collaborate as part of an effective team.
- Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Cantonese desirable

- This position is based in San Francisco, California with staff expected to work onsite a certain number of days per week based on department requirements
- Ability to lift and carry 25lbs for short distances

This is a regular, full-time (37.5 hours per week), non-exempt, union position that includes benefits. The starting range for this role is $32.24 to $34.13 DOE.
