Teacher/Leader In Residence
SUMMARY
The Exploratorium’s Educator Engagement teams offer nationally recognized professional development programs for teachers and leaders in science education that promote inquiry-rich and justice-centered teaching and learning.
The Teacher/Leader In Residence (TIR/LIR) position is designed for experienced Educators of Color from Exploratorium-local public schools, school districts or county offices who take a one-year leave or sabbatical from their schools, districts, or county offices. The TIR/LIR participates as a formal, embedded member of the Educator team in service of supporting Teachers of Color and science teaching and learning in their region, district, school, or community; in the Exploratorium community; and across the Exploratorium California K-12 Science Leader Network. In return, the TIR/LIR develops their leadership and teacher education skills, deepen the impact of their service to local and larger networks of teachers and students, and experience critical rejuvenation and nourishment as a professional educator, which supports their re-entry into their county office, district, or classroom. The TIR/LIR reports to a Director in the Exploratorium’s Educator Engagement team.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Contribute actively to the Exploratorium Educator Engagement team’s commitments to ensuring science Teachers of Color feel a rightful presence in science, have professional spaces and support to develop their racial wellness and literacy, and develop their and other teachers’ abilities to teach and lead for justice
- Collaborate in the design, organization, and delivery of teacher professional development workshops for the TIR’s or LIR’s home community, within in the Exploratorium community, and for/with the California K-12 Science Leader Network
- Contribute to the leadership and implementation of affinity-based professional programming for Teachers of Color and Teacher Leaders of Color
- Provide content and pedagogical support to the Exploratorium, including offering advice to exhibit designers, conducting training for floor staff, and assisting with museum public programs when needed
- Represent Exploratorium Educator Engagement teams programs both internally and externally
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS degree in the sciences, science education, or equivalent, plus 45 credits; or an MA, and a minimum of twelve years’ experience teaching or providing inquiry-based science professional learning programs for K-12 science classrooms, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Five years of science teaching experience at the middle or high school level or 5 years of teaching experience at the elementary school level
- Prior completion of an Exploratorium Institute for Teachers or for Teacher Leaders
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team of scientists and master science educators
- Ability to work on some Saturdays and evenings
- Ability to travel to local and national workshops and conferences
- Ease with the Google suite, including using Google Docs, Spreadsheets, Slides, and Drive
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience designing and facilitating professional learning for and/or with teachers in the TIR’s or LIR’s local community
- In-depth knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards
- Experience in using digital media and/or educational technology in the science classroom

This is a one year, fixed-term, full-time (37.5 hours per week), exempt, union position that includes benefits. The position starts in June 2025, and application reviews begin in November 2024.
