On-Call Floor Technician
SUMMARY
The Exploratorium Design and Development department develops, fabricates and maintains educational interactive experiences for public display at the Exploratorium’s site in San Francisco. As part of the Design and Development team, Floor Technicians are responsible for providing a safe and excellent experience for visitors through maintaining an optimal exhibit environment as well as assisting with the functioning and placement of existing exhibits. Floor Technicians work closely with the Floor Manager to identify maintenance and installation needs (such as exhibit cleaning, filter checks, addressing floor tickets) and maintain presentation and safety standards for the museum floor. Additionally, the Floor group helps support a variety of short-term floor-based activities including temporary exhibitions, art installations, daytime public programs, and evening events for multiple departments and program groups throughout the institution. The position requires a self-motivated individual with the ability to work collaboratively and to carefully follow oral and written instructions. This position reports to the Floor Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Floor Support: Support and coordinate exhibit maintenance and floor operations, including changing exhibit filters, exhibit cleaning, supporting exhibit moves under the direction of the Floor Manager. Inspects and maintains floor furniture.
- Safety Support: Report and follow up with safety hazards. Certified first air responder and serve as emergency Tactile Dome back up. Trained in radio protocol and respond to radio safety calls.
- Exhibit Storage: Pack, tag and prepare exhibits to move in and out of storage and coordinate logistics.
- Building Systems: Lighting system operator and support systems as able.
- Leadership: Guide on-call staff as needed.
- Temporary Installations and Events: Support and coordinate floor needs to accommodate temporary exhibitions, daytime programming and evening events. Respond to Spacebooking requests and add to calendar.
- Fabrication and installation: May be asked to contribute to fabrications and installations.
- Work evening and weekend shifts as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 1 years' experience in a museum, gallery or similar environment, shop experience preferred.
- Basic skills in one or more of the following areas: electrical, lighting, exhibit care.
- Basic ability to read floorplans and exhibit drawings.
- Some knowledge of fabrication of mechanical, electro-mechanical, and hydraulic mechanisms and devices helpful. Welding skills a plus.
- Ability to collaborate as part of an effective team.
- Comfort in taking direction and mentioning from senior floor staff, senior shop staff, facilities staff and project leadership.

- This position is based in San Francisco, California with staff expected to work onsite a certain number of days per week based on department requirements, and to work nights and weekends as needed
- Ability to move from place to place, twist, bend, stretch, kneel, reach, grasp and climb a ladder. Utilize a computer terminal and general office equipment. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds short distances.
