SUMMARY

The Financial Analyst is a key partner in achieving the Exploratorium’s mission and vision by providing financial guidance, support, and analysis to senior management and multiple departments within the organization. This position’s role is to be a strong detail-oriented individual contributor who understands museum operations and clearly communicates key findings to stakeholders across the organization. The Financial Analyst brings their interest in both details and big picture concepts to communicate financial performance compared to budget, short-term and long-term business performance in their areas of responsibility, and other financial analysis as needed. This position reports to the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare, consolidate and analyze financials for annual budgets and quarterly forecasts
  • Work with Financial Analyst peers to prepare budget and forecast packages, including explanatory text, variance analysis, and presentation material
  • Create financial models for specific high-visibility projects or scenarios to facilitate operational or strategic decision-making
  • Review data at the cost center/project level, division/consolidated group level, and organization level; ensure integrity of the submitted data
  • Improve financial outcomes by analyzing results, monitoring variances, and recommending actions to budget owners
  • Prepare presentation-ready financial reports, charts, tables, written summaries, and other materials
  • Assist budget owners in monitoring performance against budget, understanding reports and developing reporting
  • Provide subject matter expertise of your responsible business lines and departments
  • Research and resolve inquiries for assigned departments and/or functional areas
  • Support personnel cost tracking and payroll variance analysis
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of three – five year business plan
  • Build functionality and features into Workday Adaptive Planning (budget software) to maintain usefulness of reports and dashboards
  • Manage special projects and other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree in finance, accounting, business or closely related field
  • 3-5 years’ experience in budgeting and financial analysis
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Advanced Excel skills; Knowledge of other Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, PowerPoint) and GSuite (Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides)
  • Proficiency with financial, budgeting and report-writing software
  • Ability to take abstract concepts, questions, or situations and translate these into concrete models or analysis
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, while also maintaining a big picture perspective
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively with minimal direction and manage multiple projects; adeptness at working on both solo projects and team projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to interpret financial information for non-finance professionals and work collaboratively all levels of the organization

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a non-profit organization; understanding of non-profit financials and accounting practices
  • Experience working in Workday Adaptive Planning, especially work experience as an Administrator
  • Familiarity with business intelligence and data visualization tools (e.g. MS Power BI or Tableau)
  • Experience with SQL/database report building, particularly in Salesforce

  • This is a hybrid position, with an average of three days in office
