The Exhibit & Media Studio (EMS) develops, fabricates and maintains educational interactive exhibits for public display at the Exploratorium’s site in San Francisco and other venues throughout the world. The Technician II facilitates the maintenance and refurbishment of exhibits currently on the Museum floor at Pier 15, improves existing exhibits, and provides support for the installation of temporary and regular exhibitions at the museum. We are looking for versatile individuals with a broad range of metal and wood fabrication skills, but welcome applicants with specialized skills in either of these areas. The position requires both collaborative work within the maintenance team as well as independent work with a minimum of supervision. The position reports to the Exhibit Maintenance and Collection Manager, but works closely with Project Managers.
Diagnose and correct exhibit maintenance issues on the museum floor using appropriate technology and skills; improve and rebuild existing exhibits as time and budget allow.
Maintain high quality interactive exhibits using appropriate skills in machining and/or woodworking, according to Exploratorium guidelines.
Fabricate parts using shop machinery; fabricate custom cabinets and wood parts from shop drawings.
Provide general construction support for temporary exhibitions and floor installations.
Work closely and collaboratively with Exhibit Developers, Project Directors and Project Managers as appropriate for specific work.
Collaborate with design, engineering and production staff to identify improvements in exhibit design, construction and maintenance methods.
Complete assignments in a timely and professional manner.
Provide support and coordination with Exhibit Maintenance Explainers.
Properly, safely, and respectfully use shop equipment and tools and contribute to general shop maintenance and supply ordering.
Additional duties as assigned. Some weekend work may be required.
BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in the fields of design, art, mechanical or electrical engineering.
Minimum 5 years experience operating common machine shop and/or woodworking equipment (vertical and horizontal mill, lathe, hydraulic press, shear, break, punch, table saw, router); experience in a production environment or with exhibit fabrication preferable
Demonstrated experience working with standard materials for machining and/or woodworking, including laminates
Able to maintain shop equipment and hand tools.
Ability to work closely and collaboratively with variety of staff across the organization.
Ability to work on multiple projects and manage one’s time.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds short distances. Able to move from place to place; bend, stretch, grasp, reach, kneel and twist.
